![]() The disparate stories and characterizations are somehow magically linked with a shimmering uniform soundscape. In the process, a young foot soldier feels guilt, an amphetamine addict commits murder, and two lovers are reunited after an airliner trip. The loose narrative takes you from rural America to outer space to London and everywhere in between. It is like a series of sonic vignettes with all manner of interesting segues and audio cues between songs. I used to think that I was the only one who described "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" as a "Mental Movie," but Ric Menck made a similar observation in his "33 1/3" series book of the album. Whenit the MOFI SACD version was finally was released, I found that my expectations were met so well that listening to it seemed "underwhelming" it sounded too much like the perfect form of the album that I was hearing in my head for all these years. Its a favorite album of mine, and my expectations for this version were unrealistically high. I put 4 stars only to this excellent Expanded Edition, because the sound already was discovery in Mr. So, in my opinion, the records of this years, sound better in Monoaural, so the mixes in stereo are, in general, mock-stereo. In The middle of sixties, the productors example George Martin of The Beatles, expent much more time mixes the songs in Mono than Stereo. The group never made music like this ever again. The music doesnt suffer, though some of the groups best songs are on here, and it is nice to know that at least the first incarnation of the Byrds made this gentle bow out of the public eye before it dissolved almost completely. This album was so understated and unassuming that it had some appeal from that angle, but in general, the album was just simply trippy and psychedelic. David Crosby, one of the strongest songwriters, and the drummer, Michael Clarke, left the group after this album was made. Maybe they wanted to tell their fans that they were breaking up, and to all appearances, thats how things happened. This album was the most psychedelic of the groups albums, but it has a feeling of saying goodbye. This album was, indeed, notorious among the group.
